Born in 1942 in Allahabad, Amitabh Bachchan is the elder son of Hindi poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and social activist Teji Bachchan. He went to Sherwood College, Nainital and later, earned a degree from Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi. Thanks to his rich baritone, he began his film career in 1969 as a voice narrator in Mrinal Sen's Bhuvan Shome and marked his debut with Saat Hindustani.

On the personal front, Amitabh Bachchan married veteran actress Jaya Bachchan in 1973, who was also his co-star in films like Sholay (1975), Abhimaan (1973) and Ek Nazar (1972), among others. The couple has two children - Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan Nanda. While Shweta married businessman Nikhil Nanda, Abhishek tied the knot with actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
