Bengaluru's Second Airport: Why Nelamangala And Kanakapura Are Top Contenders For Location?

Nelamangala and Kanakapura Road are top contenders for Bengaluru's second airport, with 4,400 acres identified at each site. The move aims to handle rising passenger traffic and counter competition from Tamil Nadu’s Hosur airport project.

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government is very closer to finalising the location for Bengaluru’s second airport, with Nelamangala and Kanakapura Road emerging as the final two options. This decision follows a detailed review of seven potential sites.

Why the Rush for a Second Airport?

The urgency to finalise the location is driven by multiple factors. One key reason is Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) projecting that Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) will reach a passenger capacity of 90 million by 2033. Officials believe a second airport will be necessary to handle the future surge in air traffic.
Additionally, Tamil Nadu's planned airport at Hosur has added pressure. There are concerns that further delays might push passengers towards Hosur, making it Bengaluru’s de facto second airport. "If the government waits till 2033, Karnataka risks losing its advantage," a senior official warned.

Why These 2 Locations Won The Race?

Nelamangala and Kanakapura Road have emerged as the final two options for Bengaluru's second airport due to their strategic location and available land resources. Both sites are approximately 30 to 35 kilometres from the city, offering convenient access for passengers from Bengaluru’s southern and western areas, where connectivity to Kempegowda International Airport is less efficient. Each location boasts 4,400 acres of open land, suitable for large-scale infrastructure development. The government believes these areas can handle future traffic demands while easing the burden on KIA, which is projected to reach a footfall of 90 million by 2033. Additionally, their proximity to key transport routes makes them practical choices for the project.

Strategic Benefits for Passengers

The proposed airport locations are expected to better serve passengers from Bengaluru's southern and western areas, reducing travel time compared to KIA. While Vasantha Narsapura near Dabbaspet was initially in contention, it is now considered more suitable for Tumakuru due to its proximity to KIA.

Possible Partnership with BIAL

To fast-track the project, the government is considering inviting BIAL to develop the second airport. This move would help bypass a non-compete clause in effect until 2033. "BIAL has done well in developing KIA, and we believe they will be a strong partner in building the new airport as well," an official noted.
