CONGRESS

The Indian National Congress (INC), popularly known as Congress, is the oldest political party in India. Founded in 1885, it was the first modern nationalist movement to emerge in the British Empire in Asia and Africa. From the late 19th century, and especially after 1920, under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, the Congress partybecame the principal leader of the Indian independence movement. It operates on the ideology of Gandhian Socialism and Social Democracy. Its political position is centre-left in contrast to its arch-rival the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which is the right-wing nationalist party.

On social issues, it advocates secular policies that encourage equal opportunity, right to health, civil liberty, and welfare of weaker sections and minorities, with support for a market-oriented mixed economy. Being a centric party, its policy predominantly reflected balanced temporal positions including secularism, egalitarianism. It has remained out of power at the Centre since it was defeated in 2014 by the BJP under the leadership of Narendra Modi.
