GBS Scare Continues In Pune: 1 Death Confirmed, 6 Suspected As Total Tally of Cases Rise To 167

Pune: The cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) in Pune continue to spread a scare among the residents as, according to the latest data released by the Public Health Department, 167 cases have been reported with one death confirmed and 6 more suspected. The autoimmune disorder, which affects the peripheral nervous system and can cause muscle weakness or even paralysis, has called for close monitoring by health authorities.

Among the seven reported deaths, one has been confirmed as directly related to GBS, while the cause of the remaining six deaths is still under investigation. On a positive note, 91 patients have successfully recovered and been discharged. However, 48 individuals remain in intensive care units (ICUs), and 21 are currently on ventilator support.

GBS is a rare but serious autoimmune disorder where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the nerves, leading to muscle weakness and, in severe cases, paralysis. While the exact cause is unknown, infections can sometimes trigger it.
