Mumbai reports its first death due to Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) as a 53-year-old ward attendant succumbs at Nair Hospital. Maharashtra Health Minister urges citizens not to panic, assuring that GBS is not like COVID-19.

GBS Death in Mumbai
Mumbai: A 53-year-old man from Wadala, working as a ward attendant at BMC’s VN Desai Hospital, has died due to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) at Nair Hospital, marking the first GBS-related death in Mumbai.
Hospitalisation and Diagnosis
The patient was admitted to Nair Hospital on January 23 with fever. After a series of tests, including one that detected fluid in his brain, he was diagnosed with GBS. As his condition worsened, he was shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for critical treatment.Despite receiving IV immunoglobulin (IVIg) for five days, undergoing three cycles of plasmapheresis, and being put on antibiotics for a lower respiratory tract infection, the man succumbed to his illness late Monday night, confirmed Nair Hospital Dean, Dr. Shailesh Mohite.
According to a report from Nair Hospital’s Department of Community Medicine, the official cause of death was “Septic shock with Sepsis with lower respiratory tract infection with Guillain-Barre Syndrome.”
Maharashtra Health Minister Prakash Abitkar On The Death
After the death was confirmed, Maharashtra Health Minister Prakash Abitkar shared his views on the rising cases of GBS virus cases in Mumbai. “It’s not a virus like COVID. There is a fear among people but it’s a routine virus. Patients are getting discharged.
