Elon Musk re-posted a tweet by influencer Laura Loomer, which accused US District Judge John McConnell Jr of a conflict of interest. The Trump ally's post claimed that Judge McConnell's daughter, Catherine, works at the Department of Education, an agency that Musk and the Trump administration have considered defunding. This connection, according to Loomer, should have prompted Judge McConnell to recuse himself from cases involving the Department.
Loomer further added that she 'uncovered' X and Facebook accounts of Judge McConnell, 'which proves he has been involved with the Biden admin'.
"On May 3rd, 2024, Judge John “Jack” McConnell tagged himself at the White House during the Biden Admin where his daughter Catherine McConnell, who was appointed by Joe Biden to the Department of Education, spoke to Joe Biden’s Commission on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, & Economic Opportunity for Hispanics," the influencer said on X, platform formerly known as Twitter.
Judge McConnell is yet to respond to these accusations.
Meanwhile, Trump's Department of Justice late Monday filed a request for a stay of Judge McConnell’s orders, including his initial restraining order on the administration's funding freeze and the one directing the admin to restore the federal funding.
McConnell wrote in his latest order, “The broad categorical and sweeping freeze of federal funds is, as the Court found, likely unconstitutional and has caused and continues to cause irreparable harm to a vast portion of this country.”
“Agencies are now enjoined from implementing their own statutory authorities and exercising their own discretion, The Court’s Orders prohibit agencies from exercising their lawful authorities to ensure that taxpayer funds are being expended in an orderly and proper fashion, and intrude on the President’s Article II authority to direct subordinate agencies how to exercise their own authorities," the DOJ lawyers countered.
