Parvati Nair returns to Kannada cinema with Mr Rani, a comedy-drama featuring Deepak Subramanya in dual male-female roles. Directed by Madhu Chandra, the film marks her comeback after Vascodigama (2015).
Popular actress Parvati Nair returns to Kannada cinema after a hiatus with an out-of-the-box film titled Mr Rani, in which lead actor Deepak Subramanya's character has two shades—one as a male and the other as a female.
In an exclusive with Times Now, Parvati Nair, who recently got engaged to Chennai-based businessman Aashrith Ashok and is soon to tie the knot, shares insights into her funny and engaging Kannada comeback film, Mr Rani.
Funny and engaging
The Greatest of All Time (GOAT) actress, who played a junior SATS officer in the film, was last seen in the Kannada movie Vascodigama (2015), directed by Madhu Chandra. She now returns for Madhu Chandra’s Mr Rani, which hits screens on Friday, February 7.
“I was pleasantly surprised when I got a call for a Kannada film after such a long time despite me having not stayed in touch with any from sandalwood. The moment I heard Mr Rani’s script, the first thing that struck my mind was ‘funny and engaging,” said Parvati Nair.
She further explains that Mr Rani is unlike most of the serious roles she has portrayed on screen.
"Unlike most of the roles I played earlier, which were serious, the one in Mr Rani is funny, cute, and nice. We shot extensively since it involved many challenges, especially with lead actor Deepak transforming into a female character with all the attire and makeup. Mr Rani is the result of the team's effort and hard work," said Parvati Nair.
Believable factor
When Madhu Chandra approached Parvati Nair, she reveals that she was initially skeptical since the film’s lead actor was a relative newcomer and not an established star.
"As an actress, I asked Madhu Chandra the typical question about who was playing the lead role. When I found out it was a newcomer, I immediately lost interest. However, when he shared the gist of Mr Rani in a one-liner, I was drawn to it. Unlike before, today's industry is more about the script than the actor or other factors," she notes.
Furthermore, on Mr Rani’s theme of a male actor also playing a female character, Parvati Nair feels that while several films in the past have featured male actors in female getups, the audience could easily identify the difference.
"The way Deepak has portrayed the female character is strikingly unbelievable. The transformation is so convincing that people on set didn’t recognise Deepak when he was in the female getup. I'm hoping the audience will enjoy the film along with the performances," she adds.
Before signing off, Parvati Nair expresses her regret about not being able to participate in the promotional activities of Mr Rani, as she is busy preparing for her most special day—her wedding. The actress, who recently announced her engagement to Aashrith Ashok, is set to tie the knot in the coming days.
