Pune: New Railway Line Soon to Facilitate Commuters for Proposed Purandar International Airport

Pune's plan to strengthen its mobility network has received a boost. This comes as the authorities have started works on a new railway line from Rajewadi station on the Satara route. Once constructed, the railway line will effectively facilitate those travelling to and from the proposed Purandar international airport. The Rajewadi station is located on the Satara Railway line, which is at the close proximity to the airport. Therefore, this location is an ideal site for a dedicated spur line.

In addition to that, if the Pune-Lonavala railway line is expanded then it will help optimise the outer bypass and improve traffic flow, said a Pune Mirror report. Meanwhile, the authorities are thinking to move the passenger terminal from Fursungi station on the Pune-Miraj route to Shindawane.

The comprehensive plan covers 2,550 sq km across Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). As per the estimation, the project is expected to cost Rs 1.26 lakh crore, which will be implemented strategically in three phases. The plan also includes metro expansion, expanding bus rapid transit (BRT) corridors, strengthening PMPML services and upgrading railway infrastructure.

With that, an outer railway bypass will also be laid for connecting Talegaon and Daund railway stations. Works on this will be carried out in two phases. In order to cause minimum inconvenience to commuters, a feeder service at first, from Talegaon to Shikrapur via Uruli Kanchan, followed by an extension to Daund.

The plan also consists upgrading several key roads -- Dive Ghat via Hadapsar-Saswad, Saswad-Bopdev Road, Uruli Kanchan-Jejuri Road, Saswad-Kapurhol-Bhor Road and Khed-Shivapur-Saswad Link Road.

Enhancement of the road and rail infrastructure will help in providing easy and smooth transportation to the upcoming Purandar Airport.
