Hyderabad: The city is likely to experience an unusual weather pattern over the next week, with a rapid succession of summer-like heat, winter chill, and unseasonal rainfall. Weather experts note that this phenomenon, which has not been observed in the past five years, signals significant changes in local climate patterns.
January is traditionally one of the coldest months in Hyderabad, with average temperatures ranging between 15.6 and 28.6 degrees Celsius. However, in recent years, the city has seen fluctuations in winter temperatures. For example, in January 2022, temperatures dropped to lows of 12 degrees Celsius, while in 2023, the winter was milder, with temperatures hovering around 15 degrees Celsius. This year, temperatures dipped as low as 11 degrees Celsius in some areas until mid-January, making it one of the coldest Januarys since 2020.
However, starting from January 25, daytime temperatures are expected to rise sharply to 34-36 degrees Celsius, which are typical of late March or early April. Such temperatures are rare for January, with the last instance occurring in January 2015, when the city recorded a high of 34 degrees Celsius, as per a TOI report.
This sudden heatwave in January has been attributed to changes in wind patterns and reduced humidity. Additionally, meteorologists are predicting unseasonal rainfall during the first week of February, particularly in the western districts of Telangana. January and February are typically among the driest months, with an average rainfall of just 9-10 mm. However, an unexpected rainstorm in February 2021 brought about 22 mm of rain, disrupting the otherwise dry winter.
Reportedly, the potential rainfall in the first week of February may temporarily replenish groundwater levels and benefit vegetation. However, the sharp drop in temperatures that is expected to follow — with a cold wave pushing minimum temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius — could stress local wildlife and disrupt plant growth cycles.
