Why Is Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project Accelerating In Gujarat But Lagging In Maharashtra?
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project is progressing rapidly in Gujarat, while facing delays in Maharashtra due to land acquisition issues, complex engineering challenges, and regulatory hurdles. Despite setbacks, significant milestones are being achieved to ensure the project's completion.

Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Progress in Gujarat, Delays in Maharashtra
Mumbai: India’s first Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project is making swift progress in Gujarat, while facing significant delays in Maharashtra. As of January 2024, the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) announced the completion of 100 per cent land acquisition for the entire corridor. But what is causing the delay on the Maharashtra side?
Gujarat's Accelerated Development
In Gujarat, the project has achieved significant milestones:
- Surat Station Nears Completion: The Surat bullet train station is rapidly taking shape, marking a significant milestone in the project's development.
Challenges Hindering Maharashtra's Progress
On the contrary, Maharashtra's segment of the project is experiencing slower progress due to several factors:
- Land Acquisition Delays: Although NHSRCL reported 100 per cent land acquisition as of January 2024, earlier delays in securing necessary land parcels in Maharashtra have contributed to the current lag in construction activities.
Despite these challenges, the project is making headway in Maharashtra. Notably, the first concrete base-slab for the Mumbai bullet train station has been successfully cast at a depth of 32 meters, equivalent to the height of a 10-story building.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project aims to change the travel game between the two metro cities, reducing the journey time to approximately two hours.
