We might be living in 2025 where the gruesome act of dowry is now a crime in India, but the practice is still very much alive in most parts of the country. Believe it or not, literacy rate, family’s professional background and roots in an urban city has hardly anything to do with the continuity of such an illegal practice, as far too many cases of dowry have come forward from some of the most affluent families in urban parts of India. Facing the issue like many others, a woman’s then fiancee- a UPSC aspirant- allegedly got offended and upset over the ‘quality’ of dowry gifts that were sent to his family. Sharing a screenshot of the disturbing chain of texts, the woman’s sister mentioned that the bride-to-be was also a government employee. In one of the most satisfying moves, the Redditor then shared that the woman’s family ultimately called the wedding off.
“10 days before my cousin's wedding,” the post read. “He's a teacher and preparing for UPSC while my sister is also a govt employee. Bless our nation,” added another.
The post was shared on Reddit, by the handle ‘Odd_Chocolate_4257’. The post was shared a day ago and pulled more than 3K upvotes from people.

The post went viral soon after getting shared, pulling all kinds of reactions. Most people found the texts disturbing and chastised the continued practice of dowry in general, while some appreciated the woman for taking quick action over canceling the wedding. Many also suggested the woman to not marry or choose a man who is this much into an illegal practice.
“This was my father when my parents got married and I'm ashamed of it. Please save your sister buddy. Please,” a user said.
“Arranged marriages in India are just pure business transactions between 2 families and I HATE it. It's always unfair to any one side of the family. Recently my 30 year old brother's wedding got cancelled at the last moment because he doesn't earn more than the girl's 60 year old father! How can you expect a guy to be more successful than a man twice his age?? Fck this world,” added another.
“Crazy People tbh, leave him,” added another.
For those not aware, dowry and taking dowry is banned in India, and is illegal under the Dowry Prohibition Act of 1961. It was enacted in 1961 in the Parliament.
