Woman From Telangana Diagnosed With Guillain-Barré Syndrome; Doctors Say, 'This Is Not the First Case'

Hyderabad: A 25-year-old woman from Telangana has been diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) and is currently undergoing treatment at KIMS Hospital, Hyderabad.

Doctors at KIMS Hospital have clarified that this is not the first case, as the hospital has treated over 30 such cases till date. They also mentioned that GBS cases typically emerge after the end of the rainy season. Emphasising that GBS is not a pandemic, the doctors reassured the public not to panic upon hearing about these cases.

Moreover, the number of suspected cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), a rare nerve disorder, in Pune and some other districts of Maharashtra has risen to 130, health department officials have said, as reported by PTI. Two patients – a 56-year-old woman from Pune and a man from Solapur district – have died due to suspected GBS in the state so far.

What is Guillain-Barre Syndrome?

GBS occurs when the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves, leading to muscle weakness, numbness, and in some cases, respiratory problems. The condition typically progresses over four weeks before symptoms stabilize, and recovery can take anywhere from 8 to 12 weeks. With prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment, over 90 per cent of patients recover completely, while 5 per cent-10 per cent may experience residual neurological impairment that can improve with rehabilitation.
